Affiliate disclosure

Some pages link to genealogy companies. If you buy a subscription or a test through one of those links, we may earn a commission. You do not pay extra. A commission does not change the price the company charges.

The links in the site config currently point at each company's public homepage, not at a tracking URL. When a network approves the site, the homepage URL in that config will be replaced with the tracking link. Either way, the link is marked rel="sponsored nofollow". Pages that contain these links also show a short disclosure under the title.

Programs we expect to use

Sites we do not treat as affiliates

FamilySearch is a free nonprofit site. We link to it because the records are there, not for a commission. The Portale Antenati, the National Archives, the Statue of Liberty—Ellis Island Foundation, state archives and parish offices are the same: ordinary citations, not sponsored links.

23andMe's publisher affiliate program has been paused. If a guide mentions that company, the mention is editorial and there is no affiliate link.

We do not write that a DNA test is medically useful, and we do not write that an ethnicity label is exact. A recommendation means the product has a research feature that fits the page: a record collection, a match list, or a Y-DNA test for a last-name study.
